The following are some factors and conditions that can contribute to the development of rough skin on the feet, especially the heels and, less frequently, the ball of the foot, particularly under the big toe.

Environment: Foot fungus such as Tinea Pedis thrives in warm, dark, or moist locations and is quite contagious. It is common to pick this up from gym floors and locker rooms, around swimming pools, and in other places where people are walking barefoot.

Footwear: Shoes, which do not fit properly at the heel, can cause repetitive friction and pressure on the skin that in turn causes thick calluses that are susceptible to tinea pedis. These calluses often turn into rough skin on the feet.

Sharing Shoes and Socks: If someone in the house has tinea pedis, then sharing socks and shoes can spread the infection. The socks need to be properly washed to kill the fungus.

Diabetes: People with diabetes eventually develop poor circulation in the feet. As a result, they become susceptible to infections such as tinea pedis.
